  NOBODY LIKES A FAGMO
So here's a good one.

Apparently, Broadway.com told the producers of 13, THE MUSICAL that while they'd continue to sell tickets to the Jason Robert Brown musical about tiny people with tiny problems, they would not market the show to teenagers or tell schools it was appropriate for students.

"My Goodness, isn't that 13's target demographic??", you might ask.

Why yes, it is. And group sales are the make or break for any Broadway show.

Bway.com's reason is the word "fagmo", which the main character is called numerous times by most of the rest of the cast for pretty much no reason. The character's not gay (well...depending on what performances you see). And the show never explains that it's wrong to call people gay.

My first thought here is that if the writers are trying to portray any sort of realistic view 13 year-olds, then yeah, keep it. After all, when I was in high school and got called a fag (this word "fagmo" had yet to be invented) nobody stood up and said like, "hey guys, umm, that's not a nice word". But I actually was a fagmo, so what do I know?

But I support Bway.com's stance and their right to say, "hey, we don't think the show you created is appropriate for teenagers". And "hey, we don't wanna give the bigots of the world a new word to hurt people with". But at the same time I applaud those brave, fearless producers for sticking by their writers and not censoring the work. Bravo.

Oh wait! This just in: "Fagmo" has been cut from the show. Starting this Wednesday, teenagers will no longer call other teenagers by derogatory homophobic slurs. Justice has been served.

To be honest, the word didn't bother me, but maybe it should have. I think I was distracted by, well, everything else going on on stage. Either way, interesting to see what kind of power a sales organization has.

And btw, just wait till the handicapped get a hold of this show.

This is me telling you what's worth your time and money in New York theatre. I'm not a critic. So don't read this for any kind of brilliant analysis. But I do critique the critics. I'm also fascinated by theatre marketing. And expect some gossipy posts too. I'm into that. Feel free to leave comments.
